A CCTV camera has been fitted on an area near Leigh town centre as part of a Wigan Council scheme to crack down on crime.

They have been set up on an area at Chadwick Street and Selwyn Street and will be there for three months.

The camera which was paid for by Brighter Borough funding from the three Leigh West councillors, is mobile and will be reviewed monthly by the local authority.

On behalf of the three Leigh West councillors, Lord Peter Smith, said: “During the successful month of action in Leigh at the end of last year, residents told us that they would feel safer with more CCTV cameras in the area, so we have clubbed together our Brighter Borough money to deliver this.

"That’s what Brighter Borough is all about – listening to local people and investing in projects that they will benefit from.

“Residents have been very receptive as it gives them extra security.

"The camera will be here for a three month period but once this is over, the camera can be deployed elsewhere in Leigh West ward as appropriate.”

Last year the council also announced that £400,000 from the £5m Believe in Leigh fund will be spent on tackling anti-social behaviour and crime in the town centre and nearby areas.

The investment follows the results of a survey completed by 600 residents last year.

Lead environmental enforcement officer for the Leigh West area, Sue Catterall, joined ward councillors Sue Greensmith, Lord Peter Smith and Myra Whiteside after the camera was installed.
