PLANS are progressing in a campaign to build a memorial statue in memory of Buzzcocks frontman Pete Shelley who died on December 6.

The Leigh-born musician, who grew up on Milton Close, died following a heart attack at his home in Estonia.

Two weeks ago, campaigners met representatives such as Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, Leigh MP Jo Platt and Martyn Walsh from Inspiral carpets at The Turnpike.

Following the meeting Mr Burnham tweeted: "Brilliant meeting at Leigh Turnpike today to discuss a fitting way of marking the amazing life of Leigh lad Pete Shelley."

He added more details about plans on the issue will be released soon.

Paul Lally, one of the campaigners, says another meeting has been arranged to take place on Saturday, March 2 to discuss ideas.

Following Pete's death, a petition was launched by Hindley Green councillor Paul Maiden to get a statue put in place in the town. A total of 780 people have signed it.

A concert with six bands from the North West was also arranged at The Boulevard in Wigan last month, which raised £784 to generate funds for the campaign.

A company in Tyldesley, DRB Photos, is supporting the cause by selling specially designed Pete Shelley mugs at the store and online.

The Elliott Street shop owner, Dave Balmer, was keen to support the campaign after being a big fan of the band in his youth.

DRB Photos has an online business called The Mug Shop which will be donating the profit of the £6 mugs towards the campaign.
