A NEW project could lead to the investment of better football facilities.

A partnership between Wigan Council and the Football Association (FA) may spark an improvement of facilities at Leigh Sports Village and Howe Bridge Leisure Centre.

Both sites already have 3G pitches, but the two public bodies will work together from April to develop a Local Football Facilities Plan.

The FA will use the plan as a tool to see if investment will improve the facilities.

As well as 3G pitches, the plan is expected to focus on aspects such as natural turf facilities, changing rooms and small-sided facilities.

The local authority's playing pitch strategy has already suggested that there is a requirement for more 3G pitches in the area.

Councillor Nazia Rehman, cabinet member for resources, finance and transformation at the council, said: “We are really keen to secure more investment in the east side of the borough.

"We are looking forward to progressing this work with the FA to see if there is any scope to bring further facilities to Leigh.

“These would be in addition to the brilliant facilities available at Leigh Sports Village and Howe Bridge which has recently had investment.

“As part of The Deal we want everyone in Wigan borough, regardless of age, gender or level of ability, to feel able to engage in sport and physical activity.”

The council and relevant community organisations could also bid for investment which will provide sustainable facilities and venues for grass roots football clubs.

Officers from the local authority will work with ward councillors to focus the work on the Leigh and Atherleigh area.
