AN investigation has been launched about a possible underground fire at the site of a former tip.

A resident contacted Wigan Council about smouldering coals at the former Milburn's tip in Hindley Green between Westleigh Lane and Leigh Road after a fire at the site last summer.

A site visit suggests there could be an underground colliery spoil fire within the tip area.

Letters are being sent out to residents in the Hindley Green area today, Friday, about the situation.

A council spokesperson said: “We have received a report of a suspected underground colliery spoil fire within the former Millburn’s tip site.

"We are due to fence off the area for safety reasons while we investigate.

“We are working closely with our partners to determine the next steps and will be issuing letters to local residents.”

Fencing is set to be be put up next week and the local authority is working with bodies such as Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Fire Service, the Environment Agency and Public Health England.

Residents will be updated as the investigations progresses.

The council added that "there is no action for local people to take at this time".
