An academic who was filmed at a Brexit Party rally apparently verbally abusing a Remain campaigner, while waving a Union Jack flagpole close to his face, is now under investigation.

Dr Niall McCrae, who has been a senior lecturer in mental health at King’s College London since 2002, previously campaigned for Brexit in Leave-voting Sutton.

But video footage which went viral on Twitter apparently showed him calling Remainer Femi Oluwole a “f***ing traitor”.

He is then purported to be saying, “f*** off you traitor” at Mr Oluwole, and waving a Union Jack flagpole close to his face, while another, standing in line, is seen throwing water at him.

Mr Oluwale was carrying a desk and a sign on his shirt which apparently read: “A no-deal Brexit would be disastrous for the UK. Change my mind.”

King’s College London says it’s “aware of complaints regarding the conduct of a member of staff and are looking into this”.

Mr Oluwole, who published the video on Twitter, said he was at the Brexit Party rally for roughly an hour on Tuesday (May 21).

He told the Standard: “Some people were constructive and polite, and even grateful to me for being an engaging Remainer, but some were just truly aggressive and angry.

“I was called delusional…treacherous scum.

“The ironic thing is that I condemned the idea of throwing things at people on Good Morning Britain just that morning, and then it happened to me hours later.”

In a statement to the Standard, King’s College London said: “We are aware of complaints regarding the conduct of a member of staff and are looking into this.

“We do not condone inappropriate or abusive behaviour. This is being taken seriously and is being dealt with as a priority.”

Dr McCrae is a lecturer in the Mental Health Nursing department at King’s College London, according to his profile on the university’s website.
