ATHERTON Carnival has come a long way since it was launched 10 years ago.

There was a parade and a few stalls at Meadowbank playing fields in 2009 but organisers could not afford to pay for bands.

Fast forward a decade and the carnival boasts a variety of bands performing in its parade before a wealth of entertainment takes place on the fields.

More than 1,000 people go to the free family fun event and stallholders ring up from Christmas to book their slot.

On Sunday, June 23, at noon, this year’s parade will set off from Gloucester Street, next to the playing fields, and march through the town. Tyldesley Brass Band, Anvil Street Drummers, and Leigh Samba Band are some of the groups that will keep the tempo up.

Unusual vehicles such as vintage cars and motorbikes will be involved as well as tractors carrying school floats.

The carnival site last year

Schools and community groups will show their colours as well before the parade makes its way back to the carnival site, where there will be more than 60 stalls on display.

Brian Seddon, who has been involved in the carnival’s organisation since its inception, said: “This year we are asking people to make as much noise as possible.

"The carnival is a lovely opportunity for Atherton to promote itself and that is what we strive to do.”

A funfair and colour run will also be held.

On stage there will be performances from dance troupes, Wigan Ukulele Band and Garrett Hall Theatre.

Presentations from firefighters and Atherton Blind Dogs will take place too.
