TODAY’S delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archives takes a look at Burnley’s old cattle market.

The cattle market’s service as a bus station site was greatly reduced in 1857 with the erection of the town’s new police headquarters and magistrates’ court on the site.

Burnley’s annual summer fair had earlier lost its place there in 1951.

Previously, the police and justices’ court were located at the back of the town hall which opened in Manchester Road in 1888 - its clock tower being visible in the background of this view.

The car parking area in the foreground disappeared with the building of the Thompson Recreation Centre on the spot in 1974.
