A DRIVER was spotted by police eating a sandwich on the motorway with no hands on the wheel.

A driver was caught eating a sandwich on the M61 near Westhoughton, with no hands on the wheel.

The motorist said he was instead using his knees to control the car, adding that "he wasn't thinking" about his actions when he was pulled over by police.

In response to the traffic offence report given by the police, the driver said: "I wasn't thinking, my knees were on the steering wheel I guess."

According to the law, not being in proper control of a vehicle is an offence, which can include eating, drinking, putting on makeup and looking at maps.

Offenders can receive three penalty points and a £100 fine when caught.

GMP Traffic tweeted: "Vehicle stopped earlier M61 N/B Prior to J5 - Driver observed eating a sandwich with no hands on the steering wheel whilst travelling along the M61. Stopped and stated he was using his knees to control the vehicle! TOR issued for not being in proper control. #ME51 @NWmwaypolice."
