MORE than £20,000 has been spent on replacing 180 street grids that have been stolen in the last year.

Astley and Hindley are two of the areas in the borough that have been targeted by thieves in recent weeks.

The local authority has been putting "visual warnings" in place of the grids such as orange cones.

Director for environment at Wigan Council, Paul Barton, said: "The removal of grids can be extremely dangerous.

"Motorists need to be vigilant, children playing in the streets or anyone going about their business can suffer a serious injury if they don't spot a missing grid top.

"We want our residents to be our eyes and ears on this and to report any suspicious activity they see

"Any information that could identify the culprits would be welcomed, such as vehicle details or registration number.

"I would also ask our scrap merchants for any instances of street grids being deposited for scrap.

"To date we have had over 180 grids stolen from across the streets of our borough, costing over £20,000 of rate payers money to replace."
