THIS photograph shows pit brow women leaving the screen room of Gibfield Colliery in Atherton.
It was taken on August 22, 1918.
The pit brow women, or lasses as they were referred to at collieries, were employed on the surface to sort coal on the screens at the pit head
The first pit-head baths in the country were built there in 1913. The colliery was closed in 1963 and the site was cleared
