THE family and friends of a 10-year-old Liverpool fan are set to walk from Anfield to Leigh to help him to receive potentially life-saving treatment.

Callum Peers, of Glebe Street, Leigh was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in June 2013.

He suffered relapses in January, 2017, August 2018 and May this year.

The Leigh Central Primary School pupil is having ongoing chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up in a bid to pay for a seven-month vaccine trial in America which will cost around £200,000.

A number of events have been arranged to raise funds for the treatment.

And on Saturday, September 28, more than 50 people will walk around 21 miles from Anfield to Leigh East ARLFC after getting a coach to the reigning Champions League winner's ground.

Callum's mum Nicola Cummins, 36, said: "Callum is doing pretty well at the moment.

"We take it day by day with how he is feeling.

"He is a massive Liverpool fan and we went to Anfield for the first time for a stadium tour recently and he is very keen to go back.

"He will be doing the last couple of miles of the walk.

"It would mean everything if Callum managed to get the treatment because we do not want him to have to go through anymore relapses - it is heartbreaking to see."

Ben's Wish Foundation, a cause set up in aid of Ben Robinson, from Leigh, who has cerebral palsy and suffered with leukemia, is supporting Callum.

In March 2016, Centurions players Dayne Weston and Martyn Ridyard visited Ben in hospital and asked him what he wanted to do more than anything.

Ben said he wanted to go on holiday with his family to Jamaica "as he could see himself on a golden beach".

A crowdfunding page was raised and a target of £40,000 was reached within two years through various events.

This included a walk from Leigh to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium in 2017. The walk was reversed the following year in aid of the hospital that looked after Ben.

Ben's dad Paul is a friend of Callum's grandad and he decided that the foundation could help.

Paul's friend Bradley Edwards has played a pivotal role in organising events for the foundation, putting his graphic design skills to good use.

He has helped to arrange a package for the walkers, which includes coach travel to Anfield and a specially-designed t-shirt featuring Callum's favourite colour, red, and dinosaurs.

Bradley added: "It is fantastic to organise another walk.

"The first one was for Ben, the second one was for the hospital and we are doing this one for Callum."

There have been other challenges in aid of Callum's cause.

Family and friends have cycled from Leigh to Blackpool in August, completed a 5,000m Race for Life event, four people are doing skydives and a ladies night will take place on November 9.

The cost of the event is £25, which includes a t-shirt and coach pass.

There will be a fundraising event at Leigh East ARLFC's base on Ledgard Avenue from around 4.30pm where there will be DJ entertainment and raffle prizes up for grabs.

To book a place click here, making sure you include your t-shirt size.

Nicola is also inviting anyone interested in fundraising for Callum's cause to contact her on Facebook.
