Over a dozen protestors took to Penge last weekend to highlight the climate emergency and to protest the council’s decision to not take park in car free day.

Extinction Rebellion protestors included a grim reaper with an egg timer, a child wearing a skeleton suit and medics carrying a tree on a stretcher.

One girl held up a sign which read: "Bromley Council! Sorry, you’re not trying hard enough."

News Shopper:

One of 15 protestors, Mark, said of the die-in: "I’m taking part because as a Penge resident and I’m concerned about the pollution on our high street here."

London’s car free day took place on Sunday (September 22) but Bromley Council said it was "not appropriate" to ban car use.

Councillor William Huntington-Thresher told News Shopper before the protest: "The council directs its funding towards helping residents achieve a permanent change to active travel 365 days a year, rather than engage in gestures and only achieve a change on one day of the year.

"We have also encouraged our walking / rambling and cycling groups in the borough to organise trips on that day, as part of encouraging change. I am concerned that the proposed stunt will severely impact emergency vehicle response times.

"Residents should be in no doubt we have been taking action for many years and have recently committed to net zero emissions by 2029, one of the most stringent targets any local authority has set."
