The latest album from popular singer songwriter Elaine Davidson is five years in the making and has survived floods and snowstorms.

It seemed dogged by bad luck and at one point she feared it would never be finished.

Called Nothing But Love, the new collection has its roots in the US and in Cumbria.

It is made up of songs inspired by her trip to California to record her previous album five years ago, including Shoot For The Moon, Lookout Mountain and California, as well as those inspired by her return back to familiar shores, including Silt & Mud and Small Town News.

Elaine said: “Fair to say there have been a few obstacles in our way recording this album.

“Behind the scenes there have been snowstorms and threatening floods and personal life issues on the team which at times made me doubt whether it would ever be completed. But here it is, and we are over the moon.”

Her inspiration comes from the natural world and she is interested in the mystical and the mythological.

Some songs are based on grim reality: “When I returned from America, it was the aftermath of Storm Desmond, which is what inspired me to write Silt and Mud.

“A song just comes to me, then I sit down and look at it and develop it. I don’t just sit there and labour at it. If you labour at it, it is probably not very good.”

The Cumbrian folk singer has teamed up with long-time musical partner, double bassist Laurence Blackadder, as well as a new collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Nick Jenkins.

Recording, editing and production was helmed by Dave Winter, who has been a long-time working partner on the Roots in Cumbria project.

The album was recorded in Elaine’s home in Stockdalewath, as well as at Ellenside and the Globe Hall in Ireby, near Wigton.

Elaine added: “It took a long time to pull together, but we’re all really happy with the album and Dave has done a cracking production job.”

Elaine is performing at the John Peel Theatre in Wigton on November 9 and at St Mary’s church in Wreay and in the village hall on November 30.

She is also appearing at Skiddaw House on October 18. For tickets, go to www.elainedavidson.com
