EFFORTS are ongoing to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in an area of Leigh.

Reports such as drug-dealing, people carrying weapons and criminal damage have been made in the Leigh West area on roads such as Glebe Street.

Dispersal orders have been enforced in recent weeks and rapid deployment cameras remain in place.

Overall, there has been a reduction in the amounts of crimes reported since the end of August.

In a joint statement, Leigh West ward councillors said: “It is an honour to represent the Leigh community and we know from first-hand experience how proud our residents feel that this is their home.

“In light of recent isolated incidents in the area we would like to reassure residents that efforts are ongoing to tackle these issues and a number of measures – including further CCTV coverage, following a request from residents - are having a positive impact.

“Partnership work between the council, Greater Manchester Police, community groups and other organisations will continue and we will play our part to make sure residents’ voices are heard.

“There are lots of positive initiatives happening in Leigh West and residents have told us that the small number of incidents in recent weeks are not representative of the community as a whole.

“Through partnership working and the efforts of the Leigh West steering group progress is being made but we would encourage residents to keep reporting any anti-social behaviour to the police.”

Meanwhile, further activity to work with the community in the area is underway.

The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Foundation will be listening to the concerns of residents over the coming weeks before assessing how it can help.

A spokesman said: “The foundation is an independent, non-aligned charity that works for peace.

"We are not faith or politically based and we do not pursue causes such as justice or truth.

"There is no other organisation that takes such a stance.

“To reduce conflict we direct our efforts at prevention, resolution and response – the before, during and after.

“We look forward to listening to residents in Leigh and to work with them to build greater trust and improve the local community.”
