THIS old photograph shows coal pickers at Nook Colliery in Tyldesley during the 1926 strike. Colliery headgear and chimneys can be seen in the background.
The pit was open from 1866 to 1965 and it eventually became the second largest in the Manchester coalfields.
In 1954, there were 1,000 men employed at the colliery, with 440,000 tons of coal produced there a year.
