THE best ranked high schools in the borough have been revealed after the release of the latest school league tables.

Golborne High School is the only school in the borough that has scored "well above" the national average in the progress 8 scores with a rating of 0.58.

Progress 8 monitors the improvement pupils make from their Year Six SATs to their Year 11 GCSEs.

Golborne High School head teacher Alison Gormally said: "The entire learning community at Golborne High School is delighted by the fabulous results that our pupils achieved in their 2019 GCSEs.

"These results are the product of a rich partnership between teachers, parents and pupils.

"We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to interact on a daily basis with such talented, well rounded and dedicated pupils.

"The staff are all exceptional practitioners who put the children first in all that they do.

"The parents of our pupils are supportive, enthusiastic and a delight to work with.

"As a school we could not be prouder of the pupils and wish them the very best of luck in continuing to aim for the stars."

Out of the area that the Journal covers, the only school that was placed in the "average" category was Lowton CE High School.

Fred Longworth High School, St Mary's Catholic High School, Bedford High School and The Westleigh School were ranked as "below average".

Hindley High School and Atherton Community School were "well below average".

Overall, Wigan borough achieved a score of -0.32, which is below the national average of -0.03.

Assistant director for education at Wigan Council, Cath Pealing, said: “We continue to be proud of the success of our schools in Wigan borough, with 91 per cent of them being rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

“Supporting our children to perform well during the exam period and gain appropriate qualifications is a key priority for us, which is why we are working with school leaders across the primary and secondary system to make sure our young people have the support they need to develop.

“A number of our schools have seen improvements in both progress and attainment and the percentage of children achieving a 4 or higher in English and maths is in line with the national average.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the outcomes for our young people so they can grow into successful young adults.”
