Atherton councillor James Paul Watson is vice chairman of the town's RBL branch.
He said: "The RBL's decision to use Atherton Park as a location to launch this year's Poppy Appeal was twofold.
nitially it was to thank the park group for their hard work in making the RBL display, and secondly it was in defiance against the recent vandalism of the First World War silhouette soldier."
Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday, November, 10.
