HUNDREDS of people turned out a service at Wigan and Leigh Hospice in Hindley on Tuesday evening to remember loved ones and give thanks.

Every year families across the borough make dedications to their loved ones and attend the special Light for a Life ceremony.

The ceremony began with a welcome by hospice chief executive, Dr Alan Baron, and was followed by a dedication from Reverend David Hamlett.

Music was provided by the Trinity Girls Brass Band and singing from The Keys Federation Schools choir.

During the service the lights on a huge Christmas tree were switched on with the glittering lights representing the many dedications made.

All names are also entered into a Book of Dedications as a permanent tribute.

The Light for a Life appeal runs until the twelfth day after Christmas.

Up until then anyone can make a dedication whether or not their loved one has a direct link to the hospice.

Community fundraiser Christine Edwardson said: “Light for a Life is a special fundraising appeal for us.

"It is an opportunity to keep memories of loved ones alive or give thanks for a happy event, such as a wedding or birth.

"People who make dedications are helping to ensure that patients from Leigh and Wigan living with incurable illnesses will be able to access the specialist care they need.”

Dedications can be made online at wlh.org.uk.

Forms are also available from Wigan and Leigh Hospice shops, the Hospice reception, some GP and dentist surgeries and other locations around the borough.

Dedications can also be taken over the phone on 01942 525566.

A separate form should be completed for each dedication.
