PLANS have been submitted to build 93 homes on the site of a former school and church.

A planning application has been issued to construct homes on the former St Gabriels Catholic School on Richmond Drive in Leigh.

The Keepmoat Homes Ltd development would contain a mixture of two to four bedroom homes.

A planning statement on behalf of the housebuilder states the development would "tie-in the surrounding neighbourhood, to provide a much-needed new family housing in this part of Leigh".

The proposals said: "It has been demonstrated through this statement that the scheme will enhance the character and appearance of the surrounding area to the benefit of the local community and provide prospective residents with first class living accommodation."

A neighbourhood consultation runs until January 4 with a decision on the proposals expected to be made by Wigan Council in March.
