A BOMB disposal team was called after a suspicious item was found in an abandoned car.
Police responded to reports of the discovery in an abandoned vehicle on Car Bank Street, Atherton near the junction of Flapper Fold Lane.
The explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team attended the scene to make an assessment.
A cordon was put in place this afternoon as a precaution while the check was carried out.
Police say specialist officers have judged there is no "current risk to the public".
However, the cordon remained in place shortly after 6pm while police attempted to conclude their investigation.
A number of addresses nearby were evacuated, but people have been allowed back inside the properties.
The cordons are currently in place on Car Bank Street, Flapper Fold Lane and Kent Road.
