THIS picture shows Bridge Street from The Avenue in Leigh around 1895-1896.
The chimney was part of an old silk weaving mill originally built in 1827, by William Walker and Co.
It later belonged to the cotton weaving firm Guest, Bamford and Danby. The pub on the right is the Pied Bull and on the left is the Brown Cow. Rooms of the Pied Bull were once used Leigh’s court house before it was demolished around 1890.
The photograph also shows people including children out in the street.
