RESIDENTS who think they have what it takes to become a councillor are being invited to an event with the local elections on the horizon.

Wigan Council is welcoming people to join them at charity Compassion in Action's base on Leigh Road in Leigh for an informal session on Thursday, February 6.

The session is for anyone who might be interested in standing for the local elections in May or any future election.

There will be the chance to learn more about the role of a councillor and the route to becoming a candidate.

Cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods at the council, Cllr Chris Ready, said: “If you’ve got an interest in local politics and have considered becoming a local councillor we’d love you to come along and find out more.

“Current elected members and council staff will be on hand to talk you through the process of standing in an election and can tell you what to expect if you’re successful.

“We’ll also talk about the difference you could make in your community and the opportunities you could have.”

There will also be a session at Wigan Town Hall on Wednesday, February 5 at 5.30pm.
