A SHOP has been given a zero rating after its latest food hygiene inspection.

The Costcutter store on Manchester Road in Astley was given the lowest possible score after a visit from Wigan Council food safety officers.

After the inspection on December 2, it was decided that an "urgent improvement" needs to be made in its management of food safety.

It was also deemed improvements need to be carried out on the shop's hygienic food handling as well as its cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building.

A Costcutter Supermarkets Group spokesman said: “Consistency of store standards among our independent retailers who run the vast majority of our stores is a priority for the business.

"The retailer at the Costcutter store on Manchester Road has, as matter of urgency, addressed the issues.

"A further inspection has now been arranged to take place at the earliest possible date and the retailer is confident that the actions taken will address the issues raised.”
