IT may only seem a few days ago that we were taking down the Christmas decorations and settling on our New Year’s Resolutions.

But now January has almost been and gone and we’re no longer looking ahead to 2020 and the new decade, we’re part of it.

It’s exciting therefore to have the opportunity to be able to talk to you about some of the plans, initiatives and events that will improve and enrich residents’ lives.

One date fast approaching is the deadline to bid in the latest round of The Deal for Communities Investment Fund (DFCIF).

We’re now into the seventh round of funding and more than £10m has been invested to help community groups.

Previous funding rounds have been split into “big ideas”, those that benefit the wider community, and “small ideas”, those that have a more local focus.

In terms of big ideas, Leigh has received more than £1.6m – the highest spend per head of population in the borough.

Meanwhile, Tyldesley and Atherton have received more than £1m.

This investment funds groups that make a real difference to people’s lives and the latest tranche is focused on providing opportunities for young people.

Bids can come from schools, Start Well centres, community groups, sports clubs and parents if you can demonstrate why your suggestion can benefit young people.

But there’s not much time left as the application process closes on February 16.

On the subject of investment projects that can make a tangible difference to our everyday lives, I was delighted to hear that the new CCTV network in and around Leigh town centre is having the desired impact.

A total of 50 new cameras and a pair of rapid-deployment units are now in operation after concerns about anti-social behaviour were flagged up with us as part of a consultation exercise.

Footage from the new cameras has helped our enforcement officers and long may that continue.

It’s all part of our Believe in Leigh fund and we will continue to listen to the community.

It’s essential residents living, working or visiting our town centres at any time of day feel safe.

Finally, last week I saw the draw for next year’s Rugby League World Cup and although we still don’t know which teams will be featuring at Leigh Sports Village, it certainly whets the appetite for all of us who can’t wait for the big kick-off.

The match in the 2013 tournament between Tonga and the Cook Islands at the LSV was a fantastic spectacle and a glimpse of what is to come next year.
