A ROAD that has been plagued by car crashes has had pedestrian islands installed to help to crackdown on speeding motorists.

Work has been carried out on Tyldesley Road in Atherton after residents and councillors raised concerns about the number of collisions that have happened on a busy stretch of the road.

Wigan Council worked with Greater Manchester Police to consider options before the local authority's traffic management teams completed the islands.

Short-term measures have already been in place over the last 18 months to improve safety including a new vehicle-activated sign and road resurfacing along with fresh painting of the road markings to improve visibility.

There has also been more signs put up in the area to raise awareness of pedestrian and cycle safety.

Councillor Paul Prescott, cabinet member for environment at Wigan Council, said: “Work has started on installing pedestrian islands following concerns raised by councillors and residents and after our traffic engineers conducted thorough road safety investigations.

“It shows that Wigan Council takes the safety of motorists and pedestrians very seriously and that it will take action where necessary and when the safety measure is suitable for the location.

“I hope motorists in the borough continue to drive with care and obey speed limits that are put in place for a reason.”
