DEMENTIA patients and their carers came together for afternoon tea at an event which highlighted the support on offer to them across the borough.

Patients at three GP practices – Poplar Street Surgery in Tyldesley, Bee Fold Medical Centre in Atherton, and Astley General Practice – were invited to the event at Memories Tea Rooms at Atherton Town Hall.

They were treated to sandwiches and scones by healthcare provider SSP Health while organisations gave talks and information about services people with the condition and carers can benefit from.

There were presentations from prevention lead at Inspiring Health Lifestyles Elanor Reynolds on health and social opportunities, and Terry Daly from the Atherton-based Guardian Angels Trust.

Terry discussed how the digital device which the organisation gives out keeps people who live with dementia or Alzheimer’s safe.

There was also information given out by Wigan Council public health officer Kerry Thompson, Age Concern’s Ian Johnson and Alzheimer’s Society dementia advisor Annette Goodfellow.

Organiser Simon Carr, practice manager at SSP Health’s Poplar Street Surgery, said: “It really was an enjoyable and informative afternoon.

"I’d like to thank our nearby care homes, The Chanters and The Hamiltons for bringing some residents along and all the organisations who gave out information.

“Wigan is well-served for support for people with dementia and it was good to highlight some of the great work being done across the borough.

“As well as reassuring patients and their carers that there is a great deal of help available, it gave our guests a lovely afternoon of smiles and scones!”
