A HEARTFELT tribute has been paid to a "fun, full of life" grandfather-of-four who died after falling down a flight of stairs in a Wetherspoon pub.

Phil Shaw, 47, from the Abb Scott Lane area of Low Moor, was on a trip to Bournemouth for a friend's stag do when he fell at the Christopher Creeke pub in the early hours of last Sunday. He was taken to Poole Hospital for treatment, but tragically died.

His wife Lisa, 48, has spoken of her devastation.

She told the Telegraph & Argus: "Everybody is in shock, nobody can believe that somebody who was so full of life has been snatched away from us.

"He went down to Bournemouth for a friend's stag do, he went down full of excitement, he was really looking forward to it."

Mr Shaw left drove down the Friday before and was due to come back to Bradford on the Sunday - a journey he was sadly never to make.

It was in the early hours of the morning, when Mrs Shaw's world was turned upside down.

"I got woken up at 3am by my daughter, she came upstairs and said 'mum, the police are here'. They told me I needed to contact Poole Hospital because there had been an accident and he was in a bad way."

Mrs Shaw and her daughter rushed to set off to reach him as soon as they could, but only got as far as Woolley Edge Services, near Wakefield, when they received a call to say he had passed away.

They somehow managed to find the strength to carry on down to Bournemouth, with a stop in Derby to break the devastating news to Mr Shaw's 81-year-old father.

When they arrived at the south coast, they were told there was nothing more medics were able to do for him.

"It has been the worst week of my life. No-one can believe it - everyone is shocked. It's unfair, he was just full of life, everyone is devastated.

"He just tried to make me smile every day, he did everything for his family.

"We only met 10 years ago, when I took him over to meet my friends, he just fit in everywhere. He became everybody's friend. He enjoyed life to the full."

Mr Shaw, who leaves four children, four grandchildren and two stepchildren, worked at Dixons Kings Academy in Lidget Green as a site assistant.

"He had only got the job in September, he hadn't been there long, but he loved it," Mrs Shaw said.

The pair met through Facebook and their first date was a "laugh from start to finish" and it led to a decade "full of fun and laughter".

"He looked after me," said Mrs Shaw. "He used to say 'if you're happy, I'm happy'.

"He was just this amazing person that has touched so many lives. It's just so unfair that he had his life snatched away from him."

The coroner was in touch with Mrs Shaw yesterday to say her husband's cause of death was multiple head injuries. Mr Shaw was the third man to suffer a fall on the stairs to the gent' toilets in the pub. In early June, a man was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after plunging down the stairs. He was critically ill for some weeks afterwards, and it is understood he still hasn't fully recovered.

And in August last year another man suffered a bleed to the brain in a fall at the pub.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “A company representative met with environmental health officers from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council on Tuesday. This was in order to review the stairs which lead down to the gents' toilets at the pub. They stated that in their opinion no offences had been committed, and therefore no enforcement action was required as there was no risk to the public.

“This means that no defects were found on the stairs, with the hand rail or in the level of light. As a result of the two incidents last year the stairs were assessed, at Wetherspoon’s request, by an expert from the Health and Safety Executive. While we are still waiting for the final report no issues were raised from the initial assessment.”

However, a spokesperson from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council said their investigation continues.

"The council has visited the premises and met with a company representative this week," the official said.

"At this time we are awaiting further information and therefore the investigation remains ongoing.”
