A YOUNG girl from Llandudno will technically be celebrating her second birthday this weekend, despite the fact she’s actually turning eight.

That is because Roxie Lou Davies was born on a leap day (February 29) at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Mum Gemma says Roxie, who is a year three pupil at Llandudno's Blessed William Davies primary school, only gets a "real" birthday every four years.

She added: "Roxie will be turning eight years old this weekend, but going off her age due to leap years, she will only be two.

"She loves tricking people with this and she will get them to ask her age, so she can tell them she's only two and see their reaction!"

Roxie lives in Llandudno with mum, dad, brother Josh, her dog Isla, cats George and Charlotte and hamster Jerry.

To celebrate her birthday this year, mum Gemma says Roxie will be having a trampoline party.

Gemma said: "Roxie has already handed out 'second birthday' invites and she wants the number two on her birthday cake as well.

"She loves being a leap year baby and we as a family feel it’s very special. We usually celebrate on February 28, but she's lucky this year as the 29th falls on a Saturday and this is when we will all be celebrating."

Every four years in the Gregorian calendar, an extra day is added to the calendar in order to synchronize it with the solar year.

People born on this "leap day" are often referred to as leaplings and are quite rare - with an estimated five million people around the world born on February 29.

Among the most famous leaplings are rapper Ja Rule and Mark Foster - leading vocalist of Foster The People, an American Indie band who rose to fame with their track”Pumped Up Kicks” in 2010.

Another notable leapling is Superman - with the beloved comic character, known for his superhuman strength, first being published by DC Comics – on leap year day of 1938.
