IT wasn’t the first time and it certainly wouldn’t be the last but you have to admit that this incident involving the Darwen Street bridge in Blackburn in 2002 was pretty spectacular.

An articulated lorry heading into the town centre hit the bridge and toppled over blocking the main road and causing major traffic problems.

In spite of warning signs giving the maximum height of vehicles which would fit under the bridge there were a number of incidents of lorries and buses getting ‘stuck’ and the increasing use of sat navs was being blamed.

But it was rare for one of the lorries to actually end up on its side. Fortunately, the driver escaped largely unscathed.
