A CHARITY charity has been delivering free food hampers to vulnerable people in Leigh who are self-isolating and impacted by coronavirus.

Individuals and families referred to Compassion in Action (CIA) receive the equivalent of a full week’s shop delivered direct to their door.

Each hamper contains food, toiletries and other household essentials including cleaning products, washing powder and toilet rolls.

“The most vulnerable members of our society already struggle to meet their basic needs during these challenging times of austerity,” said Pam Gilligan, chief executive officer of CIA.

“More than ever, we need to show unity in the community to meet the needs of people in crisis during this pandemic. We are hugely grateful to all our valued partners who are working closely with us to ensure that no-one in Leigh goes hungry during the UK lockdown.”

CIA’s delivery team are operating in line with government health and safety guidelines, which includes wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“I have been hugely encouraged to hear about individuals and whole streets in Leigh who are rallying round to look out for their elderly and vulnerable neighbours,” added Pam.

“This is community activism at its best and, to them, I say a heartfelt: 'Thank you'.

"Be kind and please do not stockpile. Take only what you need and consider sharing what you have so nobody is forgotten or left behind. Let us unite together in our separation.”
