FIREFIGHTERS continue to play extra vital roles during the pandemic.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) crews have been helping to deliver PPE and supporting the Nightingale North West Hospital.

Some staff volunteered to transport people who died in hospital to the temporary mortuary in Trafford, which has now been placed on standby.

GMFRS workers have also been supporting vulnerable people in the community and assisting ambulance staff in fitting certain PPE face masks.

A GMFRS spokesman said: “All areas of GMFRS are supporting the significant Greater Manchester partnership effort to tackle this crisis.

"Further collaborative work has been taking place to support those who are vulnerable in our communities.

"This includes a patient transfer service in Oldham, supporting the NHS, and supporting local authorities, such as Stockport Council, by conducting welfare check phone calls for the over 70s.

"Our partnership work is being carried out by a mixture of firefighters, support staff and volunteers.

"We are working closely with partners across the city region and are keeping this situation under regular review.”
