WE recently featured the scene on the Boulevard in Blackburn when a ‘pea-souper’ had reduced visibility to almost nothing which struck a chord with many Bygones readers.
This led us to head back into the archives and see what else we could find of the Boulevard.
This wonderfully atmospheric photograph was taken around teatime in April 1961 on a dark, wet day. At this time cars could share the road with buses.
In the background you can make out the distinctive silhouette of the former Palace Theatre which by 1961 was a cinema showing ‘continental’ films. It subsequently became a bingo hall before being demolished in 1989 to make way for Blackburn’s new telephone exchange.
