HEARTLESS burglars broke into the house of a nurse before finding the keys to her car and driving it away.

The break-in happened in the early hours of Saturday at Jody Berwick's home on Hawthorne Road in Deane while she was asleep along with her four children and husband Nick.

After entering the property the culprits stole Jody's handbag, which carried her purse and keys to her dark grey Vauxhall Zafira, before stealing it.

The theft comes as a devastating blow to Jodie, who depended on the car to get to her workplace, the Royal Manchester Infirmary, for 7.30am, at the start of her 13-hour shifts.

But now she needs to wait to get a train home from Manchester at 10.40pm, extending her working days even further than before.

Theatre nurse Jody, 37, said: "It's been scary. My four kids were in the house when they broke in.

"My eldest is 13 and he was in the next room.

"We are all sleeping in the one bedroom at the moment and at night we are up and down like a yoyo.

"These people are so thoughtless. To them the car is worthless but it is worth quite a lot to us.

"I didn't just use for work, I used it to take the kids out to places like Rivington which has been important to do.

"They have taken away quite a lot of freedom."

During the height of the pandemic Jody was redeployed as an intensive care nurse looking after coronavirus patients.

Many have vented their anger following the burglary but people have also pulled together to help Jody.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding page has raised £1,300, which will help pay for money towards her outstanding car loan, which is higher than the amount covered by insurance.

Jody said: "A lot of people have said they are enraged and disgusted about what happened because of what I do for a job.

"We are really grateful of the support we have received and we would like people to know that it's been a boost to our morale that there are good people out there."
