A CAR PARK in St Helens town centre has reopened today (Thursday, September 10) following an upgrade costing more than £200,000 by the council.

Tontine car park, the 255-space multi-storey car park in Exchange Street, St Helens, has been closed since February this year for a revamp.

This has seen a new lighting system, new signage and re-lined parking spaces installed throughout following an investment by St Helens Borough Council.

In a statement, the local authority said: "Old and failing pay on foot equipment has also been replaced with brand new pay and display machines which take cash.

"Cash payments can also be made at Birchley Street; Hardshaw Centre; Millennium Centre and North John Street.

"Payment can also be made by phone via the free mobile APCOA Connect App and the council is currently working towards offering contactless card payments and is hopeful this will be available in the very near future.

"Covid-19 signage has also been installed, advising visitors to maintain social distancing and to wash their hands regularly."

The council added that the return of Tontine means there will be 13 car parks – as well as on street bays – as an option for visitors to park in the town centre.

The statement added: "Nearby Chalon Way remains open to permit holders only, while St Mary’s is still currently closed and will undergo maintenance work before reopening to the public."

St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Councillor Andy Bowden, said: “Visitors are now able to park once again right in the heart of St Helens Town Centre and support our businesses which remains a priority for the council."
