THE photograph of the reopening of Atherton Library from 1988 stirred the memories for Journal readers.

The picture, which featured in the issue of August 27, has led to readers getting in touch.

The photograph was taken on September 2, 1988, at the the official reopening of the library in Atherton.

The picture depicted pupils from Greenhill School, who were in attendance at the library reopening.

Among those delighted to see the picture was Michael Mason, who was Atherton District Librarian at the time in 1988.

Michael recalls how staff were “very proud” of the refurbishment ahead of the library’s reopening.

He has shared some more photographs from the library at the time with the Journal.

Michael said: “I was Atherton District Librarian in 1988, and we were all very proud of the refurbishment.

“Four more photos are attached, and you are welcome to use them.

“The lady shelving books is Olwen Warbrick, who worked at Atherton Library for many years, and now lives in New Zealand.”
