RACHEL Gledhill from Mobberley is planning to swim, cycle and run 34 miles for East Cheshire Hospice on Saturday in memory of her granddad.

Rachel, 29, was due to take part in the South Manchester Triathlon in September.

However it was cancelled because of coronavirus restrictions, as was an Olympic-distance triathlon at Abersoch in north Wales on October 3 for the same reason.

Undaunted, Rachel is to stage her own triathlon on Saturday, with a one-mile swim at Pickmere Lake, followed by a 26-mile cycle ride from Pickmere to Arclid and back to Chelford.

The third leg of the event will see her run seven miles from Chelford to East Cheshire Hospice at Macclesfield, which cared for her granddad Roy Lee, who lived in Chelford and died in 2016 at the age of 78.

Rachel is looking to take the plunge at Pickmere at 9am, and hopes to arrive at the hospice at 12.45pm, being accompanied on her cycle ride by a number of friends and on the run by friends and family.

She has raised £1,770 towards her target of £2,000, and anyone who would like to support her can visit justgiving.com/fundraising/rachelsfirsttri

She said: “I didn’t want it all to go to waste as I have raised so much money already, and many people have been helping me with training.

“I have been training for this for six days a week for the last three months, and did all three, the swim, cycling and run, over the weekend, but have not done all three together yet.

“The care and attention my granddad received from all of the team at the hospice was second to none, and I would like to thank everyone who has sponsored me.”
