A SUPERMARKET chain is set to build a store in the centre of Ashton-in-Makerfield as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions.

Lidl plans to open the new store located on Princess Road as part of a multi-million-pound investment.

The company says the supermarket will feature facilities including an in-store bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

The new supermarket forms part of Lidl’s continued investment into the area which includes the development of a larger new store in Golborne, which opened in 2019, and modernisation and extension works to stores in Leigh, Wigan town centre and Pemberton over the last 12 months.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Nick Harvey commented: “We are thrilled to confirm plans to bring a new store to Ashton in Makerfield, marking another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

"We have invested significantly in the metropolitan borough of Wigan over the last few years, both in terms of investing in our existing portfolio and through our planned new stores, and we are excited to be able to offer a greater selection of our quality products and incredible value to even more shoppers.

“We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs and working with local suppliers in the construction of the new store.

"The team are very much looking forward to confirming a date for our public consultation day when we will outline our plans and get input from those who will directly benefit from the new store.”
