THROUGHOUT this year we have been forced to do many things differently because of the pandemic.

It has meant that key events in the calendar have been marked in ways we would not have previously envisaged.

We are now in the lead-up to Remembrance Day and this extremely important date is no different in that we have had to adapt our plans.

The council usually arranges 14 events across the borough but a new format is required in order to follow public health guidelines.

No parades or outside services are being organised therefore, although services will still be held at Leigh and Wigan parish churches.

These services will have a limited number of attendees with priority given to Armed Forces organisations and representatives.

In similar fashion to the recent VE and VJ Day events, we will be providing a number of resources so residents can mark the occasion from home.

It is vitally important we recognise the sacrifices of our armed forces community, both past and present. I know this borough will once again unite to pay our respects in a way that is different, but with no less significance.

Earlier this year the Ministry of Defence awarded the council gold level status for Employer Recognition, highlighting the first-class support we provide for our armed forces community.

This week we were delighted to receive the confirmation certificate that goes with the award – it is an achievement we continue to be extremely proud of.

I would also like to call on everyone across the borough to take particular care and stay safe over the Hallowe’en and Bonfire period.

Our emergency services are already stretched due to the pandemic and the next month will place extra demands on them.

Restrictions may mean families are more likely to celebrate at home so please take extra care and follow the safety advice available from our colleagues at GMFRS.

You will have seen in recent days that the government has introduced a tier system for local Covid-19 restrictions.

At the time of writing, myself and leaders from across Greater Manchester continue to be in talks with government around our designation and the support packages that should come with it.

We have clearly set out where we stand.

In the meantime, I urge everyone to continue following public health guidelines and keep the three Ws at the forefront of your minds: wash your hands, watch your space and wear a face covering.
