A SCHOOL has teamed up with a Winter Food Box project to brighten up Christmas for families.

The isolation of COVID-19 restrictions, and maybe the loss of a job, are making this a lonely and difficult Winter for many homes.

For the past five weeks, volunteers at Bridgewaters Community Café and Christ Church Pennington have been producing Winter Fun Food Boxes for 15 families in the area.

A team of drivers has taken the boxes to the families and a had a “distanced chat” over the gate.

The box has craft, suitable for each child, two recipes and all the ingredients for the family to get together and cook some large meals.

Each week families have sent in pictures of teenagers and younger children cooking delicious food!

The team wanted to make the boxes extra special at Christmas time, but did not have the resources to add any luxury seasonal items.

That was where the pupils and teachers at Lowton Church of England High School came in.

Hearing about the project, they decided to help with those Christmas extras for the Fun Food Boxes.

Time was short, but the school responded with real enthusiasm and generosity.

Within a few days they had collected large quantities of everything needed to give local families a Christmas hamper.

Headteacher, Mr Kieran Larkin said: ‘We are delighted to be able to help this project and work with the café and the church to bring a little ‘extra something’ to those most in need this Christmas.

"We all need a little cheering up and we used part of our charitable giving day to support this great venture. A little gift can go a long way to give light up to others - and there’s joy in giving too!’.

The team at Christ Church Pennington and Bridgewaters Community Café said they were delighted to have had such generous and timely support from Lowton CE High School. This school and community effort has been organised during stringent COVID-19 restrictions and needed huge commitment from everyone involved. It is an excellent example of school, staff, church, and the Bridgewaters volunteers working together to support the community at a very difficult time.
