THE rate of new cases has decreased in the borough, the council's latest Covid tracker has shown.

Rates are similar to the picture in Greater Manchester as a whole.

In the seven days from January 9 to 15, Wigan borough had 1,373 new cases identified, a rate of 417.8 per 100,000 of the population and the second highest rate of new cases of the ten Greater Manchester areas.

This rate is lower than seen regionally (the North West’s rate is 528.6 per 100,000) and nationally (England’s rate is 495.4 per 100,000).

It is a decrease on the rate of the previous seven days from January 2 and 8, when Wigan borough had 1,611 new coronavirus cases identified, at a rate of 490.2 per 100,000 population.

By ward, Leigh South and Tyldesley both saw decreases in the latest Covid rates of 31%.

Lowton East again had the highest rate of cases for the latest week (570 per 100,000 population), although had also seen a decrease in cases.

Astley Mosley Common (512) had the second highest rate, with the ward having seen an increase the rise in cases, with 60, compared with 52 the previous week.

Leigh West saw the largest increase from the previous week (83%), followed by Atherleigh (18%).

As of January 19, there were 125 COVID-positive patients in Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh hospitals

Meanwhile, there have been 49 COVID–19 deaths registered in Wigan borough in the latest ending January 8, an increase from the previous week.
