TRAFFIC is moving again on the M6 after a series of crashes led to a closure in both directions tonight.
An incident at junction 24, Ashton-in-Makerfield led to the delays.
Traffic came to a standstill between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 25 at Bryn due to a number of collisions, North West Motorway Police said.
The motorway was closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the incident and snow was removed from the lanes.
An earlier tweet by North West Motorway Police at 7.20pm read: “The M6 north and south are totally blocked due to a number of RTCs - due to weather conditions, please try to avoid 26 to 23 sb and 23 to 26 nb.”

Traffic is still held both nb and sb on M6, j23 to 26 due to these rtc's , we are trying to release trapped traffic in one lane only, still have emergency vehicles making to the scene, if you can leave M6 before j23 please do
