COMMUNITIES are being encouraged to take part in one of the UK’s longest running environmental competitions this summer.

Following a break last year, Wigan In Bloom returns for 2021 with lots of opportunities for residents.

The annual competition brings together groups from across the community to demonstrate their ability to create and maintain attractive environments that benefit residents and visitors alike.

The aim is to improve surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. It also helps to create a more sustainable environment.

Cllr Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “It is brilliant to see In Bloom will be taking place this year and it is a wonderful opportunity for communities who have spent so much time apart to come together and make a positive impact throughout the borough.

“I do hope to see as many people getting involved as possible. Whether your goal is to have a positive impact of the environment, improve the appearance of your local area or to simply have a good time with friends, the council will be here to offer support.”

Running alongside In Bloom is It’s Your Neighbourhood, a non-competitive scheme for community groups who want to help clean up and revamp disused areas or community gardens.

Bernard Pendleton, chairman of North West in Bloom said: “For many years we have received numerous In Bloom and It's Your Neighbourhood entries from Wigan borough and its surrounding areas.

“These have been very successful and have supported many improvements to greener and cleaner communities.

“We are currently receiving entries for 2021 In Bloom and It's Your Neighbourhood schemes from across the whole of the North West.

“We know how important the outdoor space is for everyone's improved health and well-being.

“We also understand and appreciate that recently some groups have not been able to complete everything as normal.

“However we are hoping to visit all entries during this summer period, including groups who have previously registered and any new groups.”

Participants are urged to adhere to relevant public health guidelines and social distancing measures.

The categories are based on the size of the entry which could range from entire towns and villages to tourist attractions, hotels, pubs and shopping centres.

The closing date for Wigan in Bloom entries is April 30, if any groups would like to speak to a council officer for more information or support please email Paul Gallagher inbloom@wigan.gov.uk.
