A BUSINESS which is passionate about sustainability will plant a tree for every order it receives to acknowledge Earth Day this year.

Six Seven Twenty, based in Golborne, provides a range of homemade soy wax candles, botanical melts and eco-friendly gifts using sustainable packaging and products.

As well as being advocates for the environment, owners, Jen and Jono are also supporting the council's Spend, Shop, Support Local campaign, which is focused on helping borough business owners to thrive.

Jen said: “As a family, we’ve become a lot more aware of climate change over the last couple of years. We’ve made changes to our diet and try really hard not to use single-use plastic so when we set up the company, continuing this attitude was really important to us.

“We’re so proud that Six Seven Twenty is a 100 per cent vegan, cruelty and plastic-free company that uses recyclable materials.”

But Jen and Jono’s commitment to the environment doesn’t stop there. Six Seven Twenty is supporting Earth Day 2021 by offering to plant a tree for every order placed between 20 and 22 April.

Jen added: “The theme for Earth Day 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’, so we chose to do this by planting trees over the three days of Climate Change Action that are being campaigned for. Trees have so many health and wellbeing benefits from helping to keep our air clean to providing enjoyable places to exercise, so we’re excited to launch this initiative.”

Before Six Seven Twenty was born, Jen worked in marketing but was made redundant as a result of the pandemic. Together, they decided to view the blow as an opportunity and set up the business from home, turning what started as a hobby into a future.

In just six months, Jen and Jono now have a healthy customer base that they are on first-name terms with.

Jen said: “The local community has been brilliant in supporting our business and helping us get it off the ground.

“Supporting local is so important but for us specifically, we appreciate every single order that comes through and it makes a huge difference to our family.

“We can provide a really personal service and will always go the extra mile. We have a lot of stock on the website but we welcome people to message us if they’d like a bespoke gift set or need some advice on scents.

“We’re happy to do that because our customers are not just a number on a screen, they’re an extended part of our family.”

Wigan Council launched its #SupportLocal campaign in November 2020 in line with its community wealth building values to provide a platform for small businesses, connect local entrepreneurs and encourage more people to shop, spend and support local.

The council is also committed to the green agenda and has ambitions to plant 1 million trees, recycle 65 per cent of waste and be carbon neutral by 2030.

Becca Heron, director of economy and skills at the council said: “Showing our support for local businesses can encourage even more people to take their hobbies and passions to another level.

“A thriving small business scene gives any place a unique personality and instils pride and community spirit, which is much needed at a time when we’ve all faced so much uncertainty.

“So, as restrictions begin to ease, don’t forget about your local online stores or independent shops. Think big by shopping small – don’t underestimate the huge difference you can make.”
