A youngster from Leigh is taking on a marathon challenge this month and raising funds for the RNIB.

Nine-year-old Jacob Ferguson is taking part in a virtual fundraiser organised by the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

Participants of the event are asked to split the 26.2-mile distance of a marathon across the month of May and share the running with family and friends.

But Jacob, who was born with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, which affects the retina, has decided to run the course by himself.

Every day, the energetic youngster has been running, walking, cycling and scooting for a mile to help him reach his target distance by the end of the month.

Jacob regularly uses the RNIB’s library and talking book services and he wanted to give back to the charity, setting an initial fundraising target of £100, which has now increased to £1,000.

Jacob said: “I wanted to sign up to Marathon Mates so they can help other people who are blind or partially sighted.

“I really enjoy their talking books service and my family have also bought lots of games from RNIB/s shop, including Braille Uno, so we can all play games together.

“I’m really looking forward to raising lots of money and enjoying the tough challenge of completing a marathon independently.”

Liz Wagner, senior challenge events manager at RNIB, said: “We are blown away by the incredible efforts Jacob is going to in fundraising for RNIB.

“The dedication and passion he’s put into his Marathon Mates mission has touched us all, and we are extremely grateful for his support.

“The money Jacob raises will help us continue to smash the barriers that still exist in society for blind and partially sighted people, so please dig deep and donate.”
