SHOPPERS and business owners are disgusted with fly-tippers who continue to dump their rubbish in Leigh.
Back Market Street has been plagued with people leaving bin bags, boxes and other household waste for several months with the council regularly stepping in to clear the road.
One regular shopper said: “We really need to take action against whoever is responsible for leaving this waste.
“It’s been a problem for a while and people are dumping it faster than the council can clear it up.
“When you walk past you can see movement under the rubbish and vermin are breeding.”
Cllr Paul Prescott, portfolio holder for planning, environmental services and transport at Wigan Council, said: “We know how much our residents love our town so it is sad to report that some residents spoil it by illegally fly tipping.
“Our team has been heavily involved in combating the problems reported on Back Market Street.
“This has included providing education, issuing warnings and legal notices, and serving fixed penalties.
“We are now also looking at the option of CCTV to monitor illegal deposits of waste.
“We encourage anybody with information relating to fly tipping offences to contact us so we can take the appropriate course of action.”
Incidents can be reported through the council’s ReportIt service at https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Report-it/Report-a-problem.aspx”
