ALMOST all secondary schools in the borough will have catch-up classes this summer.
A total of 19 secondary schools will be running educational programmes this summer alongside non-academic activities for all ages.
The summer schools are expected to offer a blend of academic education and ‘enrichment’ activities and focus primarily on pupils moving from Year 6 to 7.
The programme will be funded from a £200m pot which the government has set aside as part of the £3bn education recovery fund for schools in England.
Wigan council has also been awarded £1.3m worth of grant funding to offer a Holiday Activities and Food Programme for all the school holidays in 2021.
The funding, awarded to the council for the first time, is available for children and young people who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals with 15 pc set aside for those in need of support who do not meet the criteria.
According to the latest data, 11,610 children in Wigan borough were eligible for free school meals in May, equating to 7,487 families based on unique addresses.
Every child who is eligible should have received the list of sessions by now.
In addition, from July 19, parents should receive £15 per child per week which will be paid either directly into bank accounts or via Aldi Vouchers from the COVID Local Support Grant, to support families accessing free school meals.
Parents should have been informed about the summer schools by the end of June. Here are all the secondary schools in Wigan taking part this summer.
