FIRSTLY, I would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year.

We enter 2022 with a great deal to be optimistic about and with the Rugby League World Cup and the UEFA Women’s Euros on the horizon, it promises to be a significant one for Leigh and our borough.

Unfortunately, I must reflect that due to the Omicron variant, our case rates are at a high level and it remains incredibly important to keep following the public health guidance to reduce the transmission of Covid-19.

Parts of the guidance regarding testing have been modified this week, meaning those without symptoms who register a positive lateral flow (rapid) test are no longer required to book a PCR test, but to start isolating immediately and register their result.

While Covid levels are high, people can be confident that rapid tests are highly accurate, the UK Health Security Agency has said.

Anyone who develops one of the three main symptoms - a new cough, a high temperature or a loss of taste or smell - should stay at home, self isolate and take a PCR test.

The advice to help reduce the spread of Covid remains the same as ever, please remember to wash your hands, wear a face covering and watch your distance.

And, if you have not already done so, take the opportunity to get your vaccine, whether it’s your first, second or booster dose.

Just before Christmas, the council’s cabinet approved plans for a long-term vision to drive the regeneration of Leigh.

The Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF) outlines how the town will attract investment and provide opportunities for local people and businesses.

It has been informed by business and resident responses collated from the Big Listening Project and Deal 2030 surveys and is in addition to the £5m Believe in Leigh fund.

You may well have seen last year that the council has taken over the day-to-day running of the Lake District outdoor activity centres Hinning House and Low Bank Ground.

Many of you will have fond memories of visiting these facilities from your school days and our current cohort of youngsters have visits booked in already for the next few years.

These locations are also available for private bookings and may be perfect for sports clubs, community organisations and groups.
