HERE are last night's Wigan Council election results, including the wards in Leigh.

There were 85 candidates vying for a seat on the Labour-controlled council in yesterday's (Thursday, May 5) local elections.

With one seat available in each of the 25 wards across the borough - and one extra seat in Leigh East following the death of Labour's Anita Thorpe -there was no significant change to the political composition of the council.

In the nine-contested wards in Leigh, there were no changes to the council's political seats from 2021.

Across Wigan and Makerfield's wards, Labour gained three seats.

Independent candidates lost two seats, while the Conservatives lost the long-held seat of local party leader Michael Winstanley in Orrell by 34 votes.

The results mean that the council now stands with Labour holding 61 seats, the Conservatives with 7 seats, and independent candidates also with 7 seats.
