A MUM-OF-THREE'S dedicated fundraising has raised enough money for a full day of brain tumour research.
Vikki Parker was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2020 after working on the front line at Wigan Hospital during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Suffering from migraines and panic attacks, Vikki, an auxiliary nurse from Bickershaw, said that she presumed this was due to the stress she was under at the time, and not anything more serious.
Although the illness was classified as a Grade 3 tumour and "difficult to treat", doctors said that Vikki was "lucky" her diagnosis was found early and that they could work on quickly removing the tumour.
After six weeks of radiotherapy at Salford Royal Hospital, a year of chemotherapy at Manchester's Christie Centre and then regular scans, Vikki was given the all-clear earlier this year.
In awe of the "amazing" care she received, the mum-of-three has been fundraising for Brain Tumour Research as only 1% of Cancer Research funding is allocated to the biggest cancer killer of people under the age of 40.
After months of networking with local businesses and community donations for a charity raffle, the mum-of-three has raised £3,162 for the charity.
With a day of research into brain tumours costing around £2,700, this means that Vikki's efforts have raised enough to "make a difference".
Vikki, 40, said: "I'm so happy. I didn’t ever think I’d be able to make a difference but to know I’ve funded a day is amazing.
"I'm so grateful to everyone who’s donated prizes and bought raffle tickets and supported this."
After gathering community support for her fundraising project, Vikki also confirmed that she will continue to raise money for Brain Tumour Research by selling pens and badges, and placing donation tubs in local shops.
