A MAN was sprayed with a substance while being attacked by a group of four in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Detectives are appeal for information about the assault which happened in the early hours of last Monday, June 13.

At around 12.45am police received a report of the assault on Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Inquiries established that the victim, a man in his 40s, was walking home when, near to Bryn Railway Station, he was assaulted by a group of four men.

During the assault, one of the attackers sprayed him with a substance – causing serious facial and upper body injuries.

The victim was taken to hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.

The offenders are described as being white, in their late teens or early twenties. At the time of the incident they were wearing dark coloured sportswear - one male also had a distinctive thunderbolt design t-shirt.

DC Will Lloyd, of GMP Wigan’s CID, said: “Our investigation has led us to believe that this was a completely unprovoked assault.

“We will not tolerate the use of this level of violence in our communities which is why it is so important we bring those responsible to face justice.

“Anyone with information or images/ footage which show a group of males matching this description in the area at the time should share it with us directly or via Crimestoppers.”
